Dolly and Carl first met at the Wishy-Washy Laundromat in Nashville. It was Dolly’s first day in Music City. Carl drove by in his white Chevy while 18-year-old Dolly was doing laundry. He stopped to warn her that she would get sunburned if she wore revealing clothes.
He struck up a conversation with her as she went inside to fold laundry. His sincerity and honesty left her amazed. ‘He looked at my face and was curious about who I was and what I did,’ Dolly Parton is said to have said.
According to Parton, Carl looked directly into Parton’s eyes throughout their conversation, which was quite unusual for her. Carl’s mother wanted a big wedding for the two, but Parton was restricted by her music contract, which required her to wait before walking down the aisle.
Carl and Dolly got married in a secret ceremony on May 30, 1966, in Ringgold, Georgia, because they couldn’t wait any longer. The couple has been together since their Big Day, and in 2016, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a second wedding ceremony.
