Charli XCX’s ‘Brat Summer’ Survives as Dictionary Honors It ‘Word of the Year’

Album by Charli XCX kid captured the cultural zeitgeist over the summer and the impact earned it a prestigious honor.

The title of her sixth album, it became such an influential meme that Collins Dictionary named “kid” the word of the year for 2024.

The dictionary, which released the news on November 1, shares that the “kid” “has a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.”

“Inspired by the album Charli with people across the globe and ‘brat summer’ has established itself as an aesthetic and a lifestyle,” the dictionary goes on to note.

However, Charli XCX’s definition of “kid” is a little different. Billboard lists her definition as “a girl who’s a bit messy, likes to party, and can say some silly things sometimes.”

Charli has also described the aesthetic as “me, my flaws, my shit, my ego rolled into one” and “that girl is a bit messy, likes to party and can be sometimes said some silly things. Who felt like herself but also had a breakdown? But kind of, partying through it, very honest, very candid stupid thing. But that’s a kid.

There are some summer essentials for young children, including cigarettes, a BIC lighter, and a tattered white shirt without a bra.

The brat aesthetic has become so popular that it was adapted by Vice President Kamala Harris for her campaign in July when she announced she was entering the presidential race.

Other words included in this year’s WOTY shortlist include: brainrot, era, as well as lookmaxxing, rawdogging, anti-tourism, delulu, romantasy, supermajority and ypping.
