Madonna is once again controversial.
In posts on her Instagram Stories on December 13, the “Like a Pray” singer shared AI-generated images of herself and Pope Francis. In one of the photos, Madonna can be seen holding the Pope tightly as he nuzzles her as he smiles.
“Going into the weekend like…” she captioned the post.
In the second image she shared to her account, Madonna is wearing a revealing outfit while facing the camera. The Pope then put his arm around her waist and looked at her.
“Feeling so good to see,” she captioned the post.
The photos were shared to a popular news account on X, where people quickly commented on the post. Many of them criticized Madonna for the images she shared.
“Some people need God in their lives more than the rest of us,” one person wrote.
“Finally have a boyfriend her age,” another person shared.
“Can we please not normalize this,” another added.
“She wants to stay relevant so bad,” another quipped.
“So strange.. posting anything for influence,” another X user commented.
The move to post the AI image comes after Madonna previously offered an olive branch to Pope Francis after she was previously condemned for her “blasphemous” behavior.
In a tweet, Madonna tagged the head of the Catholic Church and wrote: “Hello @Pontifex Francis – I’m a good Catholic. I swear! I mean I don’t swear!”
“Its [sic] it’s been several decades since my last confession. Can we meet someday to discuss some important issues?” she said Independence.
“I’ve been excommunicated three times. It doesn’t seem fair. Best regards Madonna,” she added.
Madonna was previously criticized in 1989 for her “Like a Pray” music video which featured images of burning crosses and a sexually explicit depiction of Jesus.
At that time, Pope John Paul II also encouraged fans to boycott Madonna in Italy and not attend her Blond Ambition tour.
Years later, Madonna was also criticized in 2006 for staging a fake crucifixion during a concert in Rome in 2006.
