Argumentative

Chandra Sri Ram has been involved in a number of legal controversies related to her husband’s career and cases.

In 1995, she sued Kuala Lumpur International School for excluding her 17-year-old son, Govind, from the school’s debate team and sought a whopping RM6 million in damages.

Both sides settled the case, but it attracted international criticism from Amnesty International and journalist groups as an attempt to limit freedom of expression.

Even then-US President Bill Clinton wrote a letter of protest to the Prime Minister when journalist Murray Hiebert, who wrote an article criticizing the incident, was imprisoned for contempt of court.

Hiebert was the first journalist to be jailed in Malaysia for contempt of court for his reporting and the first journalist in a Commonwealth country in 50 years.

It is believed that the main reason this case went to court was because Chandra was despised because the article portrayed her as a “petty, vindictive woman”.

In 2014, Chandra was accused of trying to extort RM10 million from a senior IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh, Sachin Sinha, and his family. Sinha, the commissioner of higher education, had complained to the Shri Ram Chandra Mission (SRCM), Chennai, a spiritual organization with which Chandra was affiliated, for harassing him and his family and demanding money from them.

Sinha claimed that he and his family were followers of SRCM, but they decided to leave the organization after discovering some irregularities and illegal activities.

He alleged that Chandra and some other SRCM officials threatened him and his family with dire consequences if they did not pay them RM10 million.

He also alleged that Chandra tried to influence him to support SRCM in several official matters. SRCM officials denied the allegations and said Sinha was trying to defame the organisation.
