In 2014, Chandra was accused of trying to extort RM10 million from a senior IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh, Sachin Sinha, and his family. Sinha, the commissioner of higher education, had complained to the Shri Ram Chandra Mission (SRCM), Chennai, a spiritual organization with which Chandra was affiliated, for harassing him and his family and demanding money from them.
Sinha claimed that he and his family were followers of SRCM, but they decided to leave the organization after discovering some irregularities and illegal activities.
He alleged that Chandra and some other SRCM officials threatened him and his family with dire consequences if they did not pay them RM10 million.
He also alleged that Chandra tried to influence him to support SRCM in several official matters. SRCM officials denied the allegations and said Sinha was trying to defame the organisation.
