The journey to create Pacific Drive began when Alexander Dracott decided to start his own Ironwood Studios in 2019 after working at several well-known game studios. The spark for Pacific Drive ignited while driving through the Olympic Peninsula, where Dracot was struck by the atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest and its similarities to the Portland, Oregon, memories he had from his childhood.

Initially, Delacorte began tinkering with the idea on his own, but soon realized he needed a team to realize his vision. So, amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he began building his team. By 2022, they have offices in Seattle ready to work on the project.
The team is focused on making the player’s connection with the car central to the game. Lead designer Seth Rosen emphasized that the condition of a player’s vehicle is an important indicator of their progress in the game. They want players to feel a healthy investment in the vehicle, choosing unscripted moments over scripted ones to create a more immersive experience. They also avoided adding overly frustrating elements, such as inventory management or resource gathering, aiming to provide a smoother gameplay experience.
The game was announced during PlayStation’s State of Play event in 2022, and its first trailer sparked excitement. Originally scheduled for release in 2023, the team decided to delay the release until early 2024 to ensure they could polish the game without undue pressure. In June, they announced a publishing partnership with Kepler Interactive. Finally, a story trailer at the PC Gaming Show in November revealed an official release date of February 22, 2024.
