Jason Michael Weaver was born on July 18, 1979, to Robert Lincoln Weaver and Marilyn “Kitty” Haywood. His mother was a major contributor to the Chicago-based girl group Kitty & the Haywoods.

He collaborated with the late Aretha Franklin on the soundtrack recording for the 1970 film Sparkle. His mother raised Weaver alone as his father only appeared in films. His mother supported him in both acting and singing throughout his childhood.
