Early life and education
Jidanna Theodore Mobisson was born on May 4, 1985, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, United States. His mother is Tamar Mobisson, an accountant, and his father is Oliver Mobisson, a Nigerian scientist, entrepreneur, and Igbo activist.
He spent part of his childhood in Nigeria, where his father was a professor of computer science at Enugu State University.

Jidenna is the youngest of four children in his family. He has an older brother and two older sisters. His older brother, Jeff Mobiso, is a Harvard University alumnus. One of his sisters, Nneka Mobison-Etuk, is the executive director of the African business of the Healthcare Investment Institute.
In 2003, Gidenna graduated from Milton College, where he released his first album as a graduate student with the band Black Spadez. After earning a BA in Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies from Stanford University in 2008, he moved between Los Angeles, Oakland, Brooklyn, and Atlanta, continuing his musical career while teaching full-time.
Jidanna eventually signed a record deal with recording artist Janelle Monáe’s Wondaland Records.
