Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. (born November 20, 1942) is an American lawyer and politician who is currently serving as the 46th President of the United States. He is affectionately known as Joe Biden.
He took office on January 20, 2021, after winning the December 2021 election. A member of the Democratic Party, Joe Biden served as a Senator representing Delaware in the United States Senate from 1973 to 2009.
He was elected Vice President of the United States in December 2008. He served under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017.

Early life
Joe Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on November 20, 1942. He is 81 years old, born at St. Mary’s Hospital to Joseph R. Biden Sr. and Catherine Eugenia Finnegan.
Joe Biden was named after his father. He is the first child of the Biden family and has three siblings: an older sister named Valerie Biden and two younger brothers named Francis W. Biden and James Brian Biden. He has Irish, English and French ancestry.
Before Joe Biden was born, his father was a very successful businessman, but his family was struggling financially by the time he was born. The Biden family soon moved to Delaware in search of greener pastures. He was only ten years old when his family left Pennsylvania.
They settled in Mayfield, after purchasing a home in the city. In Delaware, the Biden family’s finances improved as Joseph Sr. became a successful car salesman and was able to provide for the family’s needs. The Bidens were Roman Catholic.
During his high school days, Joe Biden played for his school’s baseball and football teams. He was elected Class President during his sophomore and junior years.

From kindergarten through fourth grade, Joe Biden attended an elementary school in Scranton. He completed fifth and sixth grades at a public elementary school in Delaware.
He attended Archmere Academy in Claymont for his junior and senior years. He graduated from high school in 1961.
He then enrolled in college at the University of Delaware in Newark, graduating in 1965 with a double major in History and Political Science.
After graduating from college, he attended Syracuse University and earned his Juris Doctor (JD) degree in 1968. In 1969, he was admitted to the Delaware Bar and licensed to practice law in the state.
Career
In 1968, Joe Biden first worked at the Wilmington Law Firm as a clerk after graduating from law school. After being admitted to the Delaware Bar, he first worked as a public defender before moving to a firm owned by a Democrat. He and a colleague then founded their own law firm, where he handled primarily criminal cases. He became a Democrat in 1969.
He was first elected to public office in 1971 when he ran for the District 4 seat on the New Castle County Council. He won and served for two years, from 1971 to 1973.
In 1972, he ran for the United States Senate as a junior senator representing Delaware. He won with 50.5 percent of the vote, defeating Republican candidate J. Caleb Boggs.
Joe Biden was 29 years old when he was elected to the Senate, and at the time of his inauguration, he was the sixth youngest senator in U.S. history. He was re-elected to the Senate six times, serving from January 3, 1973, to January 20, 2009. At the time he left office to become Vice President, he was the fourth-longest-serving senator at the time. He served as Chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee for 12 years and also as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1987 to 1995. As of 2020, Joe Biden is the 18th-longest-serving senator in U.S. history.
Joe Biden has spent time as a scholar. He taught constitutional law as a visiting professor at Widener University Law School. He taught a seminar from 1991 to 2008.
In 2008, Joe Biden launched his presidential campaign. This was his second time running for president. The first was in 1988. He withdrew from the race early after finishing fifth in the Iowa caucuses. After forming a political friendship with Barack Obama, Joe Biden was nominated as the Democratic Party’s Vice Presidential candidate for the 2008 election.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden were elected on November 4, 2008, with 53% of the popular vote and 365 electoral votes, defeating the Republicans. They ran against Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin. He was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2009. He served two terms from 2009 to 2013 and from 2013 to 2017.
He chose not to run for president in 2016, instead endorsing Hillary Clinton, then Secretary of State in the Barack Obama administration. After leaving office in 2017, Joe Biden became a professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania.
In 2020, he decided to run for President. He became the presumptive Democratic nominee in April 2020, after Bernie Sanders withdrew from the race. He became the Democratic nominee at the 2020 Democratic National Convention. He chose Kamala Harris, a female Senator representing California, as his running mate.

Personal life
Joe Biden was just 23 years old when he married his first wife, Neilia Hunter, in August 1966. Their marriage produced three children: Beau Biden (born 1969), Hunter Biden (born 1970), and Naomi Christina Biden (born 1971).
Neilia Hunter was in a fatal car accident in December 1972 when her car was hit by a tractor-trailer. Neilia Hunter was driving home from Christmas shopping with her children in the car. The accident claimed the lives of Neilia Hunter and Naomi Christina Biden. The two boys, Beau Biden and Hunter Biden, survived the accident with injuries to their legs, heads, and skulls.
Joe Biden married his second wife, Jill Biden, in June 1977. The couple met on a blind date in 1975 and married two years later at the United Nations Chapel in New York. The couple had their only child, Ashley Biden, in 1981.
