It was never expected that he would become Duke of Atholl. After his cousin, the 10th Duke of Atholl, died, he unexpectedly succeeded the deceased as the 11th Duke of Atholl.
However, before the latter died, he disowned his heir by giving away his ancestral seat and estate to charity, leaving the new Duke, John Murray, with nothing but his title and the right to raise a private army. He did so because he was disappointed that his heir would not leave South Africa for Scotland.
John Murray continued to live in South Africa while travelling to Scotland each year for the Army Review. He died on 15 May 2012 in South Africa, aged 83, and was succeeded by his eldest son, Bruce Murray.
