Early life
Gregory Ellis Mathis was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 5, 1960, to Charles Mathis and Alice Lee Mathis. During the turbulent 1960s and 1970s in Detroit, Alice raised Mathis alone after their divorce.
Mathis and his family moved to Herman Gardens in 1964 and lived there until about 1970. To avoid the increasing drug use and violent crime, they stayed away from the housing complex.
As a teenager, Judge Mathis learned that his mother had colon cancer. In the 1970s, he was imprisoned several times for drug use and other juvenile-related crimes. Because of his mother’s illness, Mathis was granted early parole.
James Mathis continued to work at McDonald’s during his time in prison and developed a new interest in political issues. He became a college activist for the Democratic Party.

Mathis is married to his longtime girlfriend Linda, a fellow EMU student. The couple has four children: Jade, Camara, Greg Jr., and Amir. Mathis is also a member of the local Seventh-day Adventist church.
