Early life

Gregory Ellis Mathis was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 5, 1960, to Charles Mathis and Alice Lee Mathis. During the tumultuous 1960s and 1970s in Detroit, Alice raised Mathis alone after their divorce.

Mathis and his family moved to Herman Gardens in 1964 and remained there until about 1970. To avoid escalating drug use and violent crime, they stayed away from the housing complex.
