Hajia Nana Shettima, the second lady, was born in Kano State on 2 July 1975. Her father, Alhaji Usman Alkali, was a Kanuri from Borno State, and her mother’s name was Hajiya Maryam Abubakar Albashir. She is her father’s third child.

Nana Shettima started school early, attending a school Islamic school in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state. Then she joined Lamisula Primary School 1 in Maiduguri, where she received her first school leaving certificate in 1988.
