On June 10, 2020, the long arm of the law caught up with Mr. Woodberry in Dubai. He was arrested along with another notorious fraudster, Hushpuppi Abbas, who is serving an 11-year sentence for the same crime.

Early life
Mr. Woodberry was born into another family of Mr. and Mrs. Ponle on May 25, 1989. He was born in the early 90s in Lagos City. His parents registered his birth as Olalekan Jacob Ponle.
Woodberry spent his formative years in Mainland Lagos, living in a middle-class neighborhood with his parents and siblings. Woodberry is a Yoruba man originally from a Southwestern state in Nigeria. He speaks English, Yoruba and Pidgin English fluently.

Raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Woodberry attended public schools for elementary and secondary education.
He graduated from high school after six years of study with high scores in the WAEC and NECO exams. Due to financial constraints, Mr. Woodberry was unable to attend college. However, he studied briefly at a polytechnic in Southwestern Nigeria before migrating abroad.
Personal life
Woodberry worked manual labor jobs as a teenager to earn money and meet his needs. He also taught himself how to use computers and began using computer-related skills to earn extra income. Woodberry does not have a girlfriend or children and he is not married.
After saving money for a while, he migrated abroad to pursue greener pastures. He moved to the United Arab Emirates and resided in Dubai. He first lived in a shared apartment with several other Nigerians before getting his own.
Woodberry became famous on social media because of his close friendship with fellow Nigerian, Hushpuppi, a famous social media personality based in Dubai. Hushpuppi and Woodberry are known for their flamboyant lifestyles which they showcase on social media. He flaunts his love for luxury consumer goods. He buys luxury cars from Rolls-Royce, Maybach to G-Wagon. He also owns luxury apartments in high-end residential areas in Dubai, Nigeria and other places around the world.
Because of Woodberry’s lavish spending and flaunting of his wealth, many people suspected him of online fraud and being a cybercriminal.
Arrested by Dubai police
In June 2020, it was reported that Dubai police had arrested Woodberry along with Hushpuppi and 10 other associates. They were said to have been detained in connection with internet fraud, informally known in Nigeria as “Yahoo”.

Woodberry and Hushpuppi were arrested in connection with a $435 million fraud. The arrest helped police recover $40.9 million in cash, 13 luxury cars, 21 computer devices, 47 smartphones, 11 flash drives and 5 hard drives containing 119,580 fraudulent files.
Dubai Police handed over Mr. Woodberry and Hushpuppi’s case to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in July 2020. The duo were extradited to the United States to stand trial for their crimes. They allegedly defrauded more than 1.9 million victims over many years.
Bargaining plea
After being extradited to the United States of America, Mr. Woodberry was tried separately from Hushpuppi. He was accused of defrauding an American company of about $188,000. He initially pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody while court proceedings continued.
However, Woodberry made the opposite decision when he pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in April 2023. The judge, Robert Gettleman, accepted the change of plea of Woodberry in a ruling delivered on December 6, 2023. April 2023. The judge set a sentencing date of July 11, 2023 after Mr. Woodberry’s attorneys and U.S. prosecutors Sign a plea agreement.
