Kathy Baker is the daughter of geologist and educator John Siwand Baker and her mother, Helen Andre, is of French descent.
She received her high school education at Mills High School in Millbrae, California. After graduating from high school, she received her diploma in 1968. Her drama mentor, Allen Knight, greatly influenced her decision to become a professional actor.
In 1970, Kathy Baker enrolled at Boston University’s School of Fine Arts. She studied acting at the California Institute of the Arts. Later, she received a bachelor’s degree in French from the University of California, Berkeley in 1977.
