Early career
Anthony was born on September 16, 1968 in New York to Puerto Rican parents. Anthony’s parents named him after Marco Antonio Muñiz, a Mexican singer. Anthony grew up in Spanish Harlem or East Harlem also known as El Barrio.
He was raised as a Roman Catholic. He is the youngest of seven children. Anthony began his musical education at home and was taught by his father, Felipe Muñiz, a professional musician and guitarist.
Anthony listened to a wide variety of music genres and artists including rhythm and blues, rock, pop, and artists such as Air Supply (Australia), José Feliciano, salsa legend Willie Colón (Puerto Rico), Rubén Blades and Héctor Lavoe, among others.
Antony was greatly influenced by Puerto Rican conductor and percussionist Tito Puente, who was his professional and personal mentor in life and later became successful.

Anthony’s career began as a freestyle singer and New York bandleader, and as a backup singer for pop groups such as ‘Muendo’ and ‘Latin Rascals.’ ‘Rebel’, his first album, was released in 1988 under Bluedog Records.
He wrote and produced the song ‘Boy I’ve Been Told’ for fellow freestyle artist, Sa-Fire. He signed with RMM Records and recorded his Spanish-language debut, ‘Otra Nate’, in 1993, establishing himself as a popular salsa artist.
In 1995, he released another breakthrough album called “Todo a Su Tiempo”, which earned him a Billboard Award for Hot Tropical Artist of the Year and a Grammy nomination. That album sold over 800,000 copies.
In the United States and Puerto Rico, the album was certified Gold. ‘When the Night Is Over’ was released in 1991, followed by ‘Otra Nota’ in 1993, ‘Toda a Su Tiempo’ in 1995, ‘Contra la Corriente’ in 1997 and ‘Marc Anthony’ in 1999.
In 2001, he released many other songs such as ‘Libre,’ ‘Mended,’ ‘Amar Sin Mentiras,’ ‘El Cantante,’ in 2007, ‘Iconos,’ in 2010 and ‘3.0,’ in 2013, ‘Opus’ (2019) and ‘Pa’lla Voy’ (2022).
