Early life and education
Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the youngest child of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif (father) and Kulsoom Nawaz (mother), was born in Lahore, Pakistan, on October 28, 1973.
Coming from a Punjabi family of Kashmiri origin, Maryam shared her childhood with three siblings: Asma Nawaz Sharif, Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz. Growing up, she was accompanied by her aunts Saeeda Amir and Khadija Hafeez.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s pursuit of education led her to Punjab Universitywhere she earned her M.A. in literature. By 2012, Maryam was actively pursuing her Ph.D.
Career
In 2012, Maryam Nawaz Sharif entered the political arena, demonstrating her strategic talent by leading her father’s election campaign, leading to his victory as Prime Minister. Recognizing her invaluable contributions to Pakistan Muslim League (N) party, she won the prestigious role of Chairwoman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme.
However, Maryam’s political journey goes beyond these achievements; she emerged as a fearless critic, using her voice to strongly challenge the Pakistani military junta and the Imran Khan government.
In October 2014, the PTI filed a lawsuit in the Lahore High Court, accusing Maryam Nawaz Sharif of misappropriating government funds for personal gain. On 12 November 2014, the court ordered her removal from office, prompting Maryam to resign as Chairwoman the following day. Recognition for her achievements came in March 2017 when she was named one of the BBC’s 100 Women. Later that year, The New York Times included her in its List of 11 most powerful women in the world.
Her political activism gained momentum in 2017 after her father was disqualified and convicted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in the Panama Papers case and money laundering through his employment in the UAE. During the NA-120 by-election, she actively campaigned for her mother, Kulsoom Nawaz.
Despite getting the PML-N ticket for the 2018 general elections from NA-127 (Lahore-V) and PP-173 in June 2018, legal trouble ensued in July. The National Accountability Bureau filed a corruption case, resulting in a seven-year jail term and a 10-year ban on Maryam Nawaz Sharif from politics. The PML-N nominated Ali Pervaiz Malik and Malik Irfan Shafi Khokhar as its candidates for NA-127 and PP-173 constituencies in the 2018 elections.
On January 3, 2023, Maryam Nawaz Sharif was sworn in as the Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League. This significant move, endorsed by PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, expanded her role in the party as she assumed the position of “Head of Organizing Committee”, entrusted with the important responsibility of reforming and re-establishing the party structure at various levels.
