Meet Matt Copson, Caroline Polachek’s boyfriend

Matt Copson and Caroline Polachek started dating in 2017. Two years later, the pair also began collaborating professionally when Matt provided the visuals for Caroline’s debut album and effectively combined his own eclectic artistic style with his lover’s unique music to create some truly stunning videos, photos, etc.

But despite the couple having been together for years, they only revealed their secret in a 2021 interview with The New Yorker. As of this writing, however, that interview is the only time Caroline’s relationship with Matt has been officially mentioned—both in print and on social media.

Before Matt, Caroline was married to Ian Drennan from 2015 to 2017. After the divorce, she told The New Yorker, “My mother was very disapproving, and my friend group was divided over it.” But on the bright side, the emotional time pushed her deeper into her music. “I was so driven by music and I loved it,” she says. Guess what, the loss of her marriage and the roots of her new love with Matt have pushed her to create some of the most emotional music of her solo career to date.

The alternative pop artist has some pretty big credits to her name right now, including touring with Dua Lipa, writing for Elon Musk, and collaborating with Charli XCX. Last we checked, her new release “Desire, I Want to Turn Into You” was dominating the charts.

For those who don’t know, Caroline first came to the limelight as the lead singer of Brooklyn-based electronic band Chairlift. In 2013, she launched her solo career under the stage name Ramona Lisa and released her debut album Arcadia the following year.

Matt Copson said he comes from a family of sandwich makers. “My dad always said Eggs and Watercress, which I think is really embarrassing for someone who owns a sandwich shop,” he said.

As for his mother, she is an artist who works for Da Thirst magazine.

Matt also has an aunt named Tina Eyre (Coleman Wealthall) and a cousin named Nicole Georgia Eyre.

Sadly, Caroline’s father passed away in April 2020 from coronavirus. Unlike Matt, Caroline says her father was not a great father. He struggled with depression and bipolar disorder all his life, which taught Caroline and her sister “frustration and complacency” at a very young age. However, her father was a brilliant thinker and scholar, a renowned China scholar, a brilliant mind and a talented musician who hated pop music and never went to see her perform.

He also notes that after Last Days, there’s only landscape and no people. “In the opera, you’ll see that I designed a 17-meter backdrop, which is a huge landscape that’s constantly changing and moving.”

But even though Matt got into opera, he didn’t like the genre. In fact, out of all the opera singers, he only liked Harrison Birtwistle’s works.

Aside from art, Matt is also involved in the music industry. He released the single “Last Days” in 2022.
