Early Life & Education
Pia Douwes was born Petronella Irene Allegonda Douwes in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands, on August 5, 1964. She was born into a family of art dealers and social workers, Evert Douwes (father) and Nelleke Douwes-Huf (mother). She is also the niece of Doris Day, a famous American actress.
Growing up, Pia Douwes originally wanted to be a nurse caring for children with intellectual disabilities, but after dancing in a discotheque at the age of 19, she realized she wanted to be a dancer.
She went to London and searched the Yellow Pages for a dance school. The Brookings Dance School was her first choice. She auditioned with an injured ankle and was accepted despite having no previous dance training.
Susi Nicoletti and Sam Cane held a music seminar in Vienna a year later. Sam Cane reportedly told Pia Douwes’ father that he would commit suicide if she did not become a star.
This statement was made after Sam Cane saw how well she danced. Although, currently, there are no solid details regarding her siblings.
