Career
Pitso Mosimane’s journey in football has been a rollercoaster, full of ups and downs, twists and turns. Starting out as an assistant coach for the under-11s at Belgian club KFC Rita Berlaar, he returned to South Africa to coach the Mamelodi Sundowns reserves. He then became assistant coach to Bruce Grobbelaar at Supersport United before eventually taking over as head coach from 2001 to 2007.
During his time at Supersport United, Pitso Mosimane led the team to two second-place finishes in the Premier Soccer League, cementing his status as one of South Africa’s top coaches. His big break came when he was appointed caretaker manager of the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, for seven matches in 2007.
Pitso Mosimane’s hard work and dedication paid off when he was appointed head coach of the national team on 15 July 2010. His first match in charge was an exciting 1-0 win over Ghana, setting the tone for what was to come. Under his guidance, the team went from strength to strength, but there were also some weaknesses, such as failing to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
In 2012, Pitso Mosimane took over as manager of Mamelodi Sundowns, where he made history. He led the team to victory in the 2016 African Club Championship, becoming only the second South African side to do so. This impressive feat earned him the title of 10th best coach in the world by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics. He also won the 2016 Glo-CAF Coach of the Year award, a remarkable achievement that made him the only coach to have won all domestic trophies in the PSL era.
Pitso Mosimane’s incredible coaching abilities were put to the test once again when he took over as head coach of Al Ahly in 2020, becoming the club’s first non-Egyptian African coach. Under his leadership, Al Ahly won their ninth CAF Champions League, beating rivals Zamalek in the final. He then went on to lead Al Ahly to victory in the Egypt Cup and the CAF Champions League again in 2021, cementing his status as one of the best coaches in the world.
In December 2021, Pitso Mosimane proved his mettle by beating Raja Casablanca in the African Super Cup in Qatar. However, after an eventful and successful tenure at Al Ahly, he resigned as coach of the club on 13 June 2022.
