After completing his schooling at Bishop Cotton Boys’ School in Bangalore, Prabhu became an executive film producer. He worked closely with his uncle and mentor VC Shanmugam, who stressed the importance of rigorously learning the filmmaking process.
This included tasks like arranging seats for artists. Before acting in films, Prabhu worked in films under Sivaji Productions, including his father’s 200th film, thirisulamwhich was the highest grossing Tamil film at the time of its release.

While still married to Punitha, Prabhu was in a live-in relationship with actress Khushbu and married her on September 12, 1993. However, the couple decided to separate just four months after their marriage.
