Early life and education
Rivers Cuomo was born on June 13, 1970 in New York City, USA, to an Italian father and a German-English mother. The origin of his name has always been controversial.
Rumor has it that Rivers Cuomo’s mother, Beverly Cuomo, named him Rivers because he was born between the East River and the Hudson River in Manhattan, or because she could hear the sound of the river outside her hospital window. He has a brother named Rivers Cuomo.
Rivers Cuomo was named after three great soccer players who played in the 1970 World Cup: Rivellino, Luigi Riva and Gianni Rivera, according to his father, Frank Cuomo, a musician who played drums on jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter’s 1971 album, “Odyssey of Iska.”
Rivers Cuomo grew up at the Rochester Meditation Center in Rochester, New York, until his father abandoned the family in 1975. His mother moved the family to the Yogaville Meditation Center in Pomfret, Connecticut. He attended Pomfret Community School after his mother married Stephen Kitts.
His mother moved the family to Yogi, Connecticut. Rivers Cuomo attended Pomfret Community School and his mother married Stephen Kitts. In 1980, they moved from Yogi to Virginia. The Kitts decided to stay in Connecticut and moved to the Storrs/Mansfield area.
Rivers-Como attended Mansfield Middle School and E.O. Smith High School during this period. He was a member of the high school choir and played Johnny Casino in the school’s production of Grease. He also changed his name to Peter Keates. After graduation, he changed back to his original name.
Personal life
Rivers Cuomo pledged to abstain from sex from 2004 until his marriage in 2006. He married Kyoko Ito on June 18, 2006. He met her in March 1997 at a one-man show at the Middle Eastern Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
He proposed to her in Tokyo, Japan, on Christmas Eve 2005. The wedding took place at a beach called Paradise Cove in Malibu. In addition to Mickey Welsh, all former and current members of the band Weezer attended the wedding, as well as Kevin Liddell and Rick Rubin. Their daughter Mia Cuomo was born in 2007, and their son Leo Cuomo was born in 2011.
Rivers-Cuomo was born with legs of equal length, but as he grew taller, his left leg became nearly two inches shorter than his right. After the success of “The Blue Album,” Rivers-Cuomo underwent the Ilizarov surgery to correct the problem.
This meant he had to have surgery to break the bones in his leg. Afterwards, he had to wear a steel brace for months and “stretch” his leg himself four times a day. Rivers-Cuomo said the experience was like “nailing” his leg.
Profession
In 1992, Rivers Cuomo, drummer Patrick Wilson, bassist Matt Sharp and guitarist Jason Cropper came together to form the band Weezer. His father named him Weezer when he was a little boy. On June 25, 1993, Weezer signed with DGC Records, a division of Geffen Records. In May 1994, they released their self-titled debut album, which is often referred to as the “Blue Album.”
During the album’s production, Rivers Cuomo asked Jason Cropper to leave the band. Brian Bell took his place. On January 1, 1995, the album was certified platinum for sales of over one million copies.
Despite his popularity, Rivers Cuomo did not like the boredom and loneliness of traveling. He also developed a “strong inferiority complex” towards rock music, saying, “I felt my songs were very stupid, and I wanted to write deep, strong, beautiful music.”
In March 1995, Rivers Cuomo underwent a major operation to lengthen his left leg, which was 44 mm shorter than his right leg. To do this, the leg bone had to be broken during the operation. Afterwards, the patient had to wear a steel brace for several months and undergo arduous rehabilitation.
During Weezer’s hiatus for the release of Pinkerton, Rivers Cuomo formed Homie and performed what he called “silly songs” for his “country band.” They planned to release an album, but only released one studio recording, a song called “American Girls.”
In 2016, Rivers Cuomo explained his process for creating albums such as Weezer’s The White Album (2016) on the Song Exploder podcast. He maintains a playlist of music on Spotify that features “cool” chord progressions that he uses for inspiration.
