Early life and education
Sachin Tendulkar was born on 24 April 1973 at Nirmal Nursing Home in Dadar, Bombay, into a Rajapur Saraswat Brahmin Maharashtrian family. His father, Ramesh Tendulkar, was a renowned Marathi novelist and poet, while his mother, Rajni Tendulkar, worked in the insurance industry.
Ramesh Tendulkar named him in homage to Sachin Dev Burman (SD Burman), one of his favorite musicians. Sachin Tendulkar’s family has three siblings: two half-brothers, Nitin Tendulkar and Ajit Tendulkar, and a half-sister, Savita Tendulkar. They are Ramesh Tendulkar’s children from his first marriage; she died shortly after giving birth to their third child.
Sachin Tendulkar was brought up in the Sahitya Sahawas Cooperative Housing Society in Bandra (East). As a child, he was considered a bully and often got into fights with new students at school.
Career
In 1987, Sachin Tendulkar’s cricket career began when he was selected to play for Bombay in the Ranji Trophy. He was also frequently used as a substitute in the outfield position and did not make it into any of the final elevens in any of the matches. The 14-year-old Sachin Tendulkar was selected to play for Bombay in India’s highest domestic first-class cricket tournament, the Ranji Trophy, for the 1987–88 season on 14 November 1987. He was frequently used as a substitute outfield player but was never selected in the starting XI in any of the matches.
His idol Sunil Gavaskar stopped playing all forms of cricket after the 1987 Cricket World Cup; thus, he almost missed out on playing alongside him. A year later, on 11 December 1988, Sachin Tendulkar made his debut for Bombay against Gujarat at the Wankhede Stadium. He was 15 years and 232 days old at the time. He became the youngest Indian to score 100 runs without being dismissed in a first-class cricket match.
When the Indian team arrived at the Wankhede Stadium to play the New Zealand team, Dilip Vengsarkar, then the captain of Bombay, saw him easily defeat Kapil Dev, India’s fastest bowler at that time, in nets cricket practice.
In the subsequent Indian national championships, the Deodhar Trophy and the Duleep Trophy, he scored a century. By the end of the 1988–89 Ranji Trophy season, Sachin Tendulkar had scored the most runs for Bombay. He was the eighth-highest run-scorer overall, with 583 runs at an average of 67.77 runs per game. He led Mumbai in the 1995–96 Irani Trophy against the Rest of India team.
In 1988 and 1989, Sachin Tendulkar was selected to tour England twice with a young Indian team organised by the Star Cricket Club. He also scored an unbeaten century while representing the Rest of India in an Irani Trophy match against Delhi at the start of the 1989–90 season. His 96 from 75 balls was crucial in the memorable 1990–91 Ranji Trophy final, which Haryana won by two runs against Bombay after taking a first-innings lead when Bombay were chasing 355 from just 70 overs on the final day.

During his time as captain, Sachin Tendulkar scored 140 and 139 against Punjab at the Wankhede in the 1995 Ranji Trophy final. His runs for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy finals at the Wankhede Stadium include 53 against Hyderabad, 128 in 2000 and 105 and 43 against Bengal in 2007.
He scored his first double century (204*) for Mumbai in a 1998 match at the Brabourne Stadium against a visiting Australian team. He is the only player in three domestic first-class tournaments to score a century on debut (Ranji, Irani and Duleep Trophies). Sachin Tendulkar also scored a double century in an innings of 233* against Tamil Nadu in the 2000 Ranji Trophy semi-final, which he considers one of his best matches.
