The Spanish tax authorities claim that she should have been classified as a Spanish tax resident during that period.

In a presentation at the OffshoreAlert Marbella Conference, attorney Miriam Company emphasized that the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer only stayed in Spain for 70 days that year, well below the minimum requirement to classified as resident for tax purposes.
In her most recent tax hearing in November 2023, Shakira successfully negotiated a settlement with authorities to prevent a trial in Barcelona related to allegations of evading $15.08 million in Spanish income taxes between 2012 and 2014, the LA Times reported.
She admitted to the charges and agreed to pay a fine equal to half of the outstanding debt, totaling more than $7.6 million. To avoid a three-year prison sentence, she agreed to pay an additional fine of $379,000.

This comes after Shakira’s recent revelations, in which she opened up about her breakup with Gerard Pique and claimed that her ex-boyfriend had negatively affected her life.
After an 11-year relationship, the Colombian icon broke up with the former Barcelona player in 2022.

Since then, she has devoted all her energy to her musical activities and marked her return by releasing a new album after a seven-year hiatus in March 2024.
Drawing from her past romantic relationships, Shakira told Jimmy Fallon in an interview, “I’ve been making music here and there, but it’s been really hard for me to put together get a group of jobs.”
“I don’t have time because of the husband factor. Now I don’t have a husband. Yeah, my husband dragged me down. Now I’m free. Now I can actually work.”
