Stevie Nicks reflects on Fleetwood Mac reunion, tense relationship with Lindsey Buckingham

Stevie Nicks has opened up about the future of Fleetwood Mac and the 2022 death of her best friend and bandmate Christine McVie.

Nicks described McVie’s death as “incredibly strange” because there were no signs or symptoms leading up to it.

“We got a call, I was going to charter a plane to see her, but her family said, ‘Don’t come, because tomorrow she might not be here.’ And the next day, she passed away,” Nicks emotionally recalled in an interview with MOJO. “I wanted to go there, sit on the bed and sing to her – that would have definitely hastened her death. But I needed to be with her. And I couldn’t do that. So, this That was difficult for me.” I, I didn’t have time to say goodbye.”

When asked if she would be open to a Fleetwood Mac reunion, Nicks responded quickly.

“Without Christine it wouldn’t have been possible,” Nicks revealed. “There’s no chance of getting Fleetwood Mac back up and running in any way. Without her, it wouldn’t work.”

McVie died in November 2022 of a stroke, the secondary cause of death being listed as cancer, as she was diagnosed with “metastatic melanoma of unknown primary origin”.

“On behalf of Christine McVie’s family, it is with a heavy heart that we inform you of Christine’s death,” said a statement released by PEOPLE. “She passed away peacefully in hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30, 2022, after a short illness. She is surrounded by her family. We ask that you respect her privacy. family at this incredibly painful time, and we ask everyone to hold Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an extraordinary person and an esteemed musician loved around the world.”

Nicks also discussed collaborating with Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingnam. Notably, Buckingham and Nicks had a strained relationship after he was fired from the band in 2018.

“Even when I thought I could work with Lindsey again, he still had some health issues,” Nicks said of Buckingham’s 2019 hospitalization for open-heart surgery. “It’s not for me to say, but I’m not sure if Lindsey could do the kind of tour like Fleetwood Mac, where you’re gone for a year and a half. That’s too demanding.”
