Standiwe Msomi Kgoroge was born on February 4, 1972 in Columbus, Ohio, USA, and spent part of her childhood in Canada. From the age of five to ten, she lived in Edmonton, then returned to South Africa.
She was raised by her parents, Mr and Mrs Msomi, and grew up with three brothers. Tragically, one of her brothers was killed during the political unrest in Mapumulo, KwaZulu-Natal. Standiwe graduated from Albini Girls High School and the University of Natal, where she studied Drama and Sociology.
