Taylor Swift Gets the Ultimate Tribute: A City Renamed After Her

The city of Gelsenkirchen has temporarily changed its name to Swiftkirchen to welcome three sold-out Taylor Swift concerts later this month.

Mayor Karin Welgen made the announcement ahead of the singer’s arrival on Wednesday, July 17, highlighting the excitement surrounding Swift’s visit to their city.

“As mayor, I am of course delighted that Taylor Swift, the most successful singer in the world today, will perform three times in Gelsenkirchen. As a result, international attention will return to our city immediately after EURO 2024,” said the mayor.

In a frenzy of excitement, fans began to gather next to the newly installed Swiftkirchen city sign to celebrate the momentous occasion.

The fun doesn’t stop there.

The city’s head of public relations, Markus Schwardtmann, also shared, “Today is the starting signal. We will install more signs in busy areas in Gelsenkirchen in the coming days. There will be many big and small surprises for Swifties in Gelsenkirchen to discover.”

In other recent news involving Swifties in Germany, the Church of the Holy Spirit, a centuries-old landmark in Heidelberg, Germany, housed in a 600-year-old historic building, recently hosted prayer services featuring Taylor Swift, which drew over 1,200 attendees.

According to Deutsche Welle, the ceremony, titled “Anti-Hero – Taylor Swift Church Service,” was a deliberate attempt to attract the attention of young people.

“The Holy Spirit Church has always been a place of encounter and exchange. That’s why a pop religious service is so appropriate. With it, we give space to the questions and issues that concern the younger generation,” Pastor Christof Ellsiepen explained to the news agency.

This event not only demonstrates the church’s adaptability but also underscores the church’s commitment to remaining relevant and inclusive in the community.

Taylor Swift is widely regarded as the world’s top pop star today. With a massive global fan base and consistently sold-out concerts, few artists can match her influence.

In 2023, Swift achieved billionaire status thanks to her considerable earnings and currently holds an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion. Notably, her Eras Tour contributed significantly to her wealth, marking a historic milestone as the highest-grossing tour ever, surpassing $1 billion in revenue – a first in history.

The Eras tour spanned 152 concerts across five continents, with Taylor Swift expected to potentially earn more than $2 billion from ticket sales alone.

Including additional revenue streams like merchandise, her total earnings from the tour are estimated to exceed $4.1 billion, according to a report from the Washington Post.
