The “My Heart Will Go On” hitmaker spoke about her diagnosis in an emotional video on Instagram while also announcing the cancellation of the remainder of her tour.

“I was recently diagnosed with a very rare neurological condition called rigid person syndrome, which affects one in every million people,” she said in her video. “While we are still learning about this rare condition, we now know that this is what is causing all the contractions I am having.”

In the months that followed, Dion and her family made both positive and negative news as she continued her battle with rigid person syndrome.

In her interview with People, she also revealed that she had experienced symptoms of rigid person syndrome for nearly two decades but decided to put them aside. She wanted to continue performing, so she was prescribed medication such as Valium to relax her muscles.

Although Dion was advised to take only two milligrams, she reportedly once took up to 90 milligrams of the drug to get through a performance.

“It could be fatal. I didn’t question the extent because I didn’t know about the drugs. I thought it would be fine. It worked for a few days, for a few weeks and then it didn’t work anymore.” “, she told People. “I didn’t understand that I could go to sleep and stop breathing. And you learn – you learn through your mistakes.”
