Jelly Roll has spoken out about the controversy surrounding Beyoncé and her album cowboy Carter about its genre.
Appeared on Andrew Schulz’s blatantly podcast, Jelly shared his thoughts on the album and how the country music industry treated it.
“Man, this is a slippery slope,” Jelly began.
“This record is very good. I don’t know if it’s Beyoncé’s best record, you know what I mean, it doesn’t feel like ‘Renaissance’ makes me feel like a complete work.” edit, but there are two or three songs on there that I think could definitely be Country Song of the Year. “Nashville is a small community that’s trying to keep country as a genre without boundaries. I know that doesn’t seem to have boundaries. It might seem counterintuitive to not put Beyoncé in there but it means country doesn’t ever be classified into sub-genres like rock did,” Jelly shared.
He added that the lack of nominations in the country categories isn’t as “evil” as people think and that many people just “missed” the album.
“If the ‘Renaissance’ campaign goes the same way with this album, I will stand up and say, ‘This is wrong,'” he asserted before sharing that some people may feel that the album is a ” eclectic art”. pieces are used to expand the space.”

cowboy Carter has long been the subject of controversy regarding its space within the country music genre. Singer Luke Bryan received backlash for his comments about the album.
Bryan appeared on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live where he talked about the lack of nominations cowboy Carter and Beyoncé received the 2024 CMA Award.
“But things get a little bit difficult — if you’re going to do country albums, come into our world and country with us a little bit. Like, Beyoncé can do exactly what she She’s probably the biggest star in music. But come to an awards show and high-five us and have fun and mingle with the family that…but country music is a lot about family,” he told Variety will. host.
However, he later retracted his words and apologized for leaving the field.

The singer previously faced backlash in the country community years ago when she performed at the CMAs with The Chicks and received a cold reception. One audience member recalled on CNN Call Me Country: The Renaissance of Beyoncé & Nashville documentary where one person even called Beyoncé “that black bitch,” according to Page Six.
