Universal Music Group opposes Limp Bizkit in royalty dispute

Limp Bizkit has now received a strong legal response from Universal Music Group (UMG), after the band’s legal team earlier this fall filed a $200 million lawsuit against the music company, demanding seeks damages related to unpaid royalties and alleges that the company intentionally concealed royalties from its artists.

Unsurprisingly, UMG disagrees with that assessment and is now asking for the case to be dropped, claiming the band’s allegations are “fiction”.

In September, Limp Bizkit sent UMG the “22nd Official Notice of Cancellation of the Flip Agreement, the Recording Agreement and the 23rd Perfect Agreement (“Cancellation Notice’),” according to Music business worldwide.

Later reports confirmed that Limp Bizkit band leader Fred Durst and his bandmates were seeking $20 million in damages, however, they claimed that the total amount owed to them by UMG could “easily surpasses” $200 million.

Now, however, UMG’s legal team has responded with a motion saying the band’s claims are “based on fallacies”. Rolling Stoneand that “Plaintiff’s entire story that UMG attempted to hide royalties is pure fiction.”

“Plaintiff’s complaint is legally unsuccessful and should be dismissed with prejudice,” said Rollin A. Ransom, an attorney representing UMG.

The complaint from the band asserts that Durst has never received royalties from UMG, despite the fact that Limp Bizkit has sold more than 45 million units since the group signed a deal in the 1990s with the label Flip Records, including distribution from UMG’s Interscope.

Limp Bizkit reached its peak of popularity in the late ’90s and early ’00s, but recently the band has seen a resurgence that they claim has brought in “millions of streaming users every month” , “selling out arenas” and “causing attention”. major festival” despite not yet producing “any new music,” according to an initial legal filing from the band.
