Usher’s profanity-filled lifetime achievement speech was uncensored, BET explains in apology

Usher’s touching speech accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 BET Awards was unfortunately marred by technical issues, but many initially believed it was intentional and that BET had censored Usher’s speech.

BET has now apologized for tainting what was supposed to be a revealing speech.

The annual ceremony, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles last Sunday, saw the 45-year-old singer of the hit “Daddy’s Home” not only pick up the award for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, but also be honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

However, during his emotional speech accepting the important honor, parts of his speech were cut, prompting fans to quickly criticize the excessive censorship.

In response to the backlash, BET issued a statement on Monday expressing regret and denying that censorship was involved.

“It was an honor to have global icon Usher on our stage with a star-studded audience and have him accept the award with a heartfelt speech.”

“Due to an audio glitch during the LIVE broadcast, parts of his speech were accidentally muted,” the channel explained.

They also said, “We sincerely apologize to Usher as we are incredibly grateful for his participation at Culture’s Biggest Night.”

“Fans can watch his entire speech uninterrupted on BET platforms and tonight’s encore show on BET,” the statement concluded.

As Usher delivered a heartfelt 13-minute speech to thank the audience for accepting his Lifetime Achievement Award, viewers of the broadcast were left frustrated as the audio frequently cut out for long periods of time, leaving many curious about what the star had to say.

Luckily, the full version of Usher’s speech has been posted to BET’s YouTube channel and will also be re-aired during the special re-broadcast on Monday, albeit with some necessary editing for profanity.

The censorship during the live broadcast caused a wave of frustration and criticism on social media platforms like Twitter, where fans expressed their frustration.

Throughout his speech, Usher focused on profound themes like fatherhood, the power of forgiveness and reflected on his illustrious three-decade music career.

The alleged censorship appeared to escalate shortly after Usher joked, “Sorry, I’m going to swear and tell you how I really feel” at the beginning of his acceptance speech.

This of course increases the anticipation of fans wanting to hear his true feelings.
