Chris Martin is aware of the hate his band, Coldplay, gets, and he’s okay with some of it.
The singer spoke to Rolling Stone where he discussed Coldplay’s reputation as an unpopular band despite their huge success.
“It would be terrible if we lived in a society where everyone had to [like the same thing]. We are a very easy and safe target. “We won’t bite back,” Martin said. “We’re four white, middle-class men from England. We deserve some pity for what our people have done. Makes sense. because we have to travel all over the world and part of that reason is not necessarily very healthy.”
Despite the hate the group received, they are currently one of the most successful tours of all time. Their Music of the Spheres tour grossed over $1 billion, the second highest-grossing tour. It’s second only to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which generated more than $2 billion in total revenue. The tour is currently expected to last until 2025, so revenue will only increase from where it is now.
However, the band has never shied away from critics. Towards the peak of fame in 2005, New York Times called the group “the most annoying band of the decade” in their album review X&Y.
“Whatever you do, some people say it’s great and some people say it’s terrible. I think [The Times is] Exactly [and we’re] do what we can to change that… We are obsessed with getting better. So the criticism was necessary and even though we had some rough patches, now, nine months later, I love the fact that we got it and we just want trying to make us a little more tolerant,” Martin explained.
Coldplay reached the peak of their fame in 2008 when they released their album Viva la Vida or Death and all his friends. The project won Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards and was the best-selling album of 2008.
During an intimate performance with SirusXM, Martin explained that some of their fans hate when the group plays their new music.
“I know it’s annoying for some of you. But back in the day, even the song ‘Viva La Vida’ was new and everyone in the room was like, ‘What the hell? They got s— ‘” he said, according to Everybody. “And it’s amazing how every new song we do has a lot of people saying it’s bad. And then 10 years later, it’s this super smash worldwide. That happened maybe three times. times. So the remaining 76 songs are terrible.”
But the band may not be around much longer as Martin has shared that the band plans to retire in 2025.
