Herman Xennt On Netflix’s CyberBunker: Criminal Underworld

Herman Xennt is featured in Netflix Cyberbunker: The criminal underworld as “a typical James Bond 007 villain.” Just then, a man with longer silver hair appeared before the camera, preparing to answer questions from a true-crime documentary crew from inside a German prison in Trier, where he is currently serving a six-year sentence from 2023.

Filmmakers Max Rainer and Kilian Lieb’s Cyberbunker delve into the story of Herman, a charming man with long blond hair and a black leather jacket, and his group of “mysterious Dutchmen.” he purchased a NATO bunker beneath the German resort destination of Traben-Trarbach in 2013. CyberBunker 2.0, Xennt’s new underground residence, quickly attracted global illegal enterprises.

CyberBunker began providing “bulletproof hosting” for websites in 1995 at another former NATO bunker in Goes, Netherlands. That means they provide extremely secure hosting for websites containing illegal or sensitive content but at a significant cost. The New Yorker claims that the majority of users ran porn sites in the late 1990s.

However, the operation moved to Germany’s Traben-Trarbach within a few years and among the websites managed by CyberBunker were The Pirate Bay and WikiLeaks created by Julian Assange. According to the Associated Press, police also claimed that it was the source of a botnet attack that took down the routers of about a million users against German telecommunications provider Deutsche Telekom in late 2016.

A German cybercrime team began looking into Herman’s activities in 2015. Authorities discovered that Xennt’s data processing center was hosting sites on the Dark Web, including marketplaces illegal. Some of these websites sell drugs, help people commit credit card fraud, or engage in other fraudulent activities. This information was found through intercepted web traffic.

Along the way, Herman teams up with Irish drug gang leader George “The Penguin” Mitchell to develop his “money machine,” an encrypted phone network and app.

In September 2019, a raid by more than 600 German police led to the seizure of servers and the arrest of seven people, including Xennt.

Where is Herman Xennt today?

Although Xennt Herman was cleared of any involvement in crimes on websites hosted by CyberBunker, he was convicted of organizing a criminal group in December 2021. Herman received a prison sentence of less than six years year. In September 2023, a German court rejected his appeal and issued a final decision.

Finally, in December 2021, Xennt was declared a criminal after a German court heard testimony from Xennt’s defense team, former associates, business partners, and prosecution witnesses. The 62-year-old was convicted of forming a criminal organization with CyberBunker, although he was exonerated of aiding and abetting crimes on his hosted websites.

As a result, he was sentenced to five and a half years in prison. He challenged his sentence, but in 2023 a higher court upheld it, so he will remain detained until his sentence is completed. According to documents, he is currently being held at a prison in Trier, Germany.

However, Xennt maintains his innocence to this day:

“My trial was not fair and neither was the verdict,” he said in the documentary series. “Nothing I can say will make sense. I was convicted before I was arrested.” He also said he “didn’t even notice” his customers were using his platform for criminal purposes before cryptically adding:

“I have a lot of plans for the future. I know no one else wants or can do what I want to do. You can’t stop me. I will still achieve my goal. Everything is ready. I have to go home. I want and eventually I will be able to realize my vision of a better world. No one can stop me.”

Herman Xennt’s family

The only members of Herman Xennt’s family that we know of are his father, sister, and brother-in-law.

His sister and brother-in-law, Anna and René Van Wolferen lived in a village near Arnhem. René is both an assistant firefighter and works for a pharmaceutical business. He was wearing a “We Face What You Fear” T-shirt and a pager on his belt. Anna is a tall, friendly woman with auburn hair.

According to Van Wolferens, Xennt always lived “on the edge”, but he was by no means a snarling genius. Instead, he is a smart, idealistic, and possibly naive person who gets himself into trouble. They worried about his mental health while he was detained, as he spent most of his days playing chess with himself and had little contact with the outside world.

When Xennt’s father passed away in January 2020, his lawyer requested authorization for her client to attend the burial. The appeal was rejected. Xennt then requested a laptop to view the service’s live feed, but this request was also denied.

The Van Wolferens go back and forth about Xennt Herman’s childhood bedroom in Arnhem and how he was always fascinated by the futuristic aesthetic. René says that, in late middle age, Xennt began researching cannabinoid treatments, because he was interested in being “forever young.” He described his brother-in-law as retarded.
