Derbyshire resident Alice Walker was crowned the winner Leader 2022. She took home the title after an outstanding performance on her specialist subject, the Peak District National Park. She is a member of the Macclesfield and Stockport quiz.

The former IT consultant won the BBC Two quiz show’s final on 11 April 2022. Her win marked the 50th anniversary of the show, which first aired in 1972.

As reported by Manchester Evening NewsShe has been taking part in the Macclesfield and Stockport quiz since the 1980s. She applied for the show after considering it for many years.

Alice answered 33 questions correctly on the show. Of those, 14 were chosen from the specialist subject. While the remaining 19 questions were from the general knowledge round. She competed against five other contestants. Ian Wang, an auditor from Manchester, and Sarah Trevarthen, an environmental and safety consultant from Bury.

Ian chose Sir Steve McQueen as his subject and came fifth with a score of 25. Sarah, on the other hand, chose Dame Barbara Hepworth as her subject and scored 27, putting her in second place overall. She shares this distinction with Patrick Buckingham, a London barrister who enjoys answering questions about Carole Lombard, a famous actress of the early 20th century.

Anthony Fish, a community safety officer from South Wales, came fourth in the competition. Between the Open All Hours questions and the general knowledge round, he scored 26 points. Meanwhile, Eleanor Ayres from Cambridgeshire, a lawyer and editor who chose the medieval Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine as her specific topic, took the final spot on the show with 22 points.

She talks about Leader ARRIVE Telegraph: “I had thought about entering for years but never expected to win, and it was a shock when I did. The opponents in the final were strong, but the questions just seemed to come to me. It was a great experience and an honor to receive such a beautiful trophy.”

Alice Walker’s career

According to Facebook, Alice Walker worked at Life IT Company Limited. This is a company that specializes in supporting and consulting for key technologies in the IBM and Microsoft portfolios. The company provides any combination of application, operational, and technical support regardless of the customer’s legacy environment.

Alice worked for the company until the end of January 2015 and retired. She announced her retirement on February 1, 2015.

But she seems to be passionate about traveling and reading. Alice talked about how she prepared for her presentation by reading lots of guidebooks and looking at maps.

“I just thought it would be an interesting topic because there’s quite a lot to know about it, as well as the geographical aspect, there’s a lot of historical and geological information,” she said.

Furthermore, she added, “I think at first I thought you had to know a lot about your major before you applied and I used to think I didn’t know enough about anything, but then I realized that people just pick a subject that interests them and learn about it, so that’s what I did.”

She also researched all the historical sites in the park before going on walks with her dog Leo to consolidate her knowledge. Her efforts certainly paid off when she successfully answered 33 questions posed by journalist Clive Myrie.

As for TV shows, Alice said she has “loved quizzes” since she was a child and started taking them seriously in the early 80s when she took part in the Macclesfield quiz. She has previously been on the BBC Egg head, The Chase on ITV and Channel 4 quiz show Fifteen to one before plucking up the courage to compete Leader.

Fun fact: Morris dancing is also one of Alice’s hobbies. Her dance group Poynton Jemmers North West Morris Dancers cheered her on, a clip of which was featured in the show.
