Meet Charlie Redd, owner of Dragon Pizza

A heated exchange between Charlie Redd, owner of Dragon Pizza in Somerville, Massachusetts, and Barstool founder Dave Portnoy has gone viral. Many people also began to wonder about the pizza shop owner and the nature of the reviews on Google and Yelp. Dragon Pizza in Somerville has gained national attention thanks to a review by owner Barstool Sports.

Internet users are discussing the video of Dave Portnoy and the pizza shop owner having an extremely heated confrontation. On the outskirts of the store, the owner interrupted Dave while he was examining a pizza. The owner wearing a Star Wars t-shirt scolded Dave about how he shouldn’t judge small businesses by one bite. What’s next is currently being discussed by people all over X (formerly known as Twitter).

Dave was making comments about the pizza place outside when the owner came out and stopped near him. He went on to express his thoughts on Dave’s assessment of food served by small companies.

Dave only gave this pizza a 6.4 out of 10 in his review. He said the cake was a flop and tasted too much like parmesan. After the evaluation, the owner of Dragon Pizza came to confront Dave. The owner expressed his dissatisfaction with Dave’s treatment of small businesses by criticizing them for such meager pizza flavor.

Later, after reading about Dave in The New York Times, he admitted that he knew who Dave was and that he didn’t care much about his reputation. Dave then decided to respond to the situation with his usual maturity, mocking the business owner for wearing a small t-shirt and returning a few other insults.

“Enjoy your pizza like any customer but I don’t appreciate what you do, come in and judge the business by just one bite,” Charlie said.

Dave’s presence seemed to agitate the owner of Dragon Pizza, who entered again. He left the building briefly before returning and telling Dave to “move on” and “don’t stand in front of my store.” The owner then threatened to contact the police, and Dave encouraged him to do so as the two began shouting obscenities at each other. Dave informed the owner that he had raised $50 million for small companies, and the owner replied, “You guys are all talking.” Before Dave started to leave the pizza shop, the two argued some more.

After the release of the first video, Dave Portnoy spoke about the incident with Tucker Carlson on Twitter, fanning the flames of debate. However, now that Dave has made it big, Dragon Pizza is receiving a lot of criticism from his devoted fans, who are posting critical comments on their social media accounts and letting leave bad reviews. Yelp even puts a warning on new reviews on its site because of the excessive review bombing.

“This business has recently received increased public attention, which often means people come to the site to post their views on the news. While we do not take a position one way or the other when it comes to this incident, we have temporarily disabled posting content to this page as we work to investigate,” Yelp warns said.

According to a post by Lan Coakley from 2018, Charlie founded Dragon Pizza that year with partner Keenan Langlois. Before starting Dragon Pizza, he owned Redd’s in Rozzie.

Charlie made the announcement that he will close Redd’s in Rozzie, his seven-year-old Roslindale diner, over the summer. He cited proposed modifications to the city’s liquor license as the cause, claiming they would erase a $350,000 investment in his own license. After the restaurant officially closed in mid-July, Charlie focused on moving to the Elm Street location to launch Dragon Pizza.

Dragon Pizza’s most recent FB post reads: “Thank you. For this team. To our community Please LOVE instead of HATE in this unbelievably ugly situation where trolls are attacking every aspect of us. We will persevere…I swear it.”

In November 2022, Charlie posted above Dave on his IG and wrote: “I always knew David Portnoy of @barstoolsports was an a$$ guy who judged pizza places with one slice like His mouth is somehow 1000% better than the people who regularly go there for business. But I had NO idea he was that bad. Check it out at @nytimes. Another case for investigative journalism #a$$hat #bendoverandletmeshowyouwhatICANDOwithABarSTOOL.”
