In early October 2023, George Santos surprised netizens when he mentioned Matheus Gerard as his husband.
“My husband Matt and I are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Senator Feinstein,” George tweeted on X. “Senator Feinstein was a trailblazer who spent over 30 years serving our country. Our thoughts are with the Feinstein family as they grieve this great loss.”
Many joked that it was a “rough start” to the marriage as the sudden announcement of a husband amid the tributes to a respected politician sparked a flurry of skeptical comments online.
Tim Hogan, a Democratic strategist, joined the conversation online with a post about X. “Did George Santos just take down his husband… with the passing of Senator Feinstein?” he wrote. “Using the death of a US Senator to take down his secret husband is somehow the gayest thing George Santos has ever done,” Kendall Brown tweeted. “10/10, incredible job.”
There was no previous mention of Matheus, but The Messenger found information regarding his husband. Back in 2020, George Santos said he was living with a partner named Matheus (aka Matt) and their four dogs.
George responded to the online outrage early Monday morning by sharing a photo of himself with Matheus Gerard, who is believed to be his wife, Matt.
At around 2:30 a.m., alongside the image, George wrote, “For those wondering and going crazy, this is Matt, my husband since November 2021… Not sure where all the ‘hard debut’ comments are coming from.” He added, “Or maybe people are just starting to understand that they’ve been taken advantage of by the media with all the nonsense they write about me? Anyway, have a great time pretending that the media’s portrayal of me is true.”
But amid the ongoing scandal over his fraudulent CV, his sexual identity was called into question when it was discovered in December 2022 that he had been married to a woman. “I have dated women. I have been married to a woman. I am fine with my sexuality. People change.”
Santos reportedly married Uadla Vieira, a Brazilian woman, in 2012; however, their wedding ceremony was largely kept secret from the public. According to individuals who spoke to The Daily Beast more recently, Santos began dating Pedro Vilarva in 2014 and the two lived together until Vilarva moved out in 2015.

The Advocate checked pharmacy licenses in New York and New Jersey and found that no pharmacists or pharmacy technicians were licensed under that name.
Therefore, it cannot be confirmed whether Matheus was actually a pharmacist.
