Profession

Bob Marley began his professional music career in 1963 when he formed the band Teenagers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, which later became the Wailers after several name changes.

In 1965, The Wailing Wailers released their debut studio album, The Wailing Wailers, which featured the track “One Love,” a remake of People Get Ready, which became a global success and established the band as a rising reggae star. After signing with Island Records, The Wailing Wailers changed their name to Bob Marley and the Wailers and released 11 more studio albums.

The band began to rise to international fame in 1974 after signing with the Island Music label and releasing the albums Catch a Fire and Burnin’. Bob Marley continued to perform with the Wailers until the band disbanded a year later. The album Natty Dread (1974) received critical acclaim.

Following the global success of Eric Clapton’s cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff”, Bob Marley shot to fame in 1975 with a live version of “No Woman, No Cry” from the album Live! The, his first hit outside of Jamaica. He followed that up with Rastaman Vibration (1976), his breakthrough album in the US, which reached the top 50 on the Billboard Soul chart.

A few months after the album was released, Bob Marley survived an assassination attempt at his home in Jamaica, prompting him to move permanently to London. Exodus (1977), a fusion of blues, soul and Britpop, was a huge success and was recorded and released during his stay in London.

Bob Marley’s posthumous album Legend, released in 1984, became the best-selling reggae album of all time. He is one of the most successful musicians of all time, with sales of over 75 million records worldwide.

Shortly after Bob Marley’s death, Jamaica posthumously awarded him the Order of Honor. In 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him 11th on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
