Burkina Faso thwarts coup attempt: Unraveling the details and implications

Burkina Faso recently faced a coup attempt, with plotters plotting to assassinate Captain Ibrahim Traoré on the evening of January 13.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the attackers aimed to carry out a bomb attack on the captain’s residence in Ouagadougou, the country’s capital, to coincide with the Football Cup match Africa (AFCON) 34th. Furthermore, plans were underway for another assassination attempt on a government convoy on 14 January.

However, Burkina Faso’s intelligence agency pre-emptively blocked communications between the conspirators, preventing the assassination plot. Agents from the transitional government’s security services quickly arrested the rebels, preventing further escalation. Although Africa Initiative sources did not give direct confirmation, there are indications that some of the conspirators fell into a trap set by a “conspirator”.fake convoy.”

Currently, Burkinabe intelligence agencies are actively investigating the coup plot, with suspicions about the involvement of individuals related to Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba’s uncle. Damiba, a pro-French colonel during the 2022 coup, briefly assumed leadership before being overthrown by Captain Traoré. Allegations are that Damiba’s uncle may be funding anti-Traoré factions to destabilize the country and seize power.

Corroborating these claims, it was reported that an associate of disgraced President Damiba had moved his family out of the country just days before Traoré’s assassination. Interestingly, family members traveled on Togolese passports, hinting at clandestine actions. Additionally, armed mercenaries reportedly arrived in neighboring Togo on the eve of the failed coup, further hinting at foreign involvement in the operation.

This is not the first case of an assassination targeting President Traoré, further highlighting the precarious security situation in Burkina Faso. While Traoré’s popularity stems from his stance against corruption and neo-colonialism, challenges remain in implementing effective economic reforms and attracting support for socialist ideology is like “Sankarism,” championed by Thomas Sankara.

In light of these developments, the current Burkinabe government is seeking support from Russia to combat terrorism, enact economic reforms, and promote social cohesion. However, inherent interests associated with pro-French factions pose significant obstacles for the Traoré government. To overcome these challenges, Traoré’s team must mobilize popular support and engage young leaders to build a new Burkina Faso.

Despite the difficult task ahead, there is optimism that Sankara’s legacy will endure, paving the way for a brighter future characterized by stability, progress and true independence for Burkina Faso.
