Why did Coldplay almost miss their first Glastonbury performance?

Coldplay’s Chris Martin has recalled the band’s debut at the 1999 Glastonbury Festival in new BBC documentary Coldplay: Our Glastonbury.

According to Martin, the band almost missed out on playing the UK’s biggest festival because their tour manager dropped them off at the wrong festival entrance just before they were scheduled to be on stage to perform.

“The hunger to get there was huge. I think our first introduction was probably carrying a not-so-good amplifier with a drunk tour manager who clearly didn’t know what he was doing,” Martin was quoted as saying by NME.

Martin recalls feeling immersed while at Glastonbury before going on to detail how the accident happened.

“We kind of did a quick tour of the whole place and then started where you should start, which is in the New Band Tent, first. I don’t think I thought about the bigger space, how wild it is. It was like we were here and we came in late and it was awesome,” the Grammy-winning singer said.

25 years after their first performance, Coldplay will perform their fifth show at the Glastonbury Festival on June 29, 2024. Their performance will be streamed live on the BBC website from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m. ET.

Since their debut more than two decades ago, Coldplay has garnered a cult following, including veteran artists.

In a BBC interview podcast, Music discovered: Coldplay’s geniusU2 frontman Bono has praised the band’s song “Clocks”.

Upon hearing the song, Bono recalled “punching the air in a manly but not aggressive way”, saying: “Oh, this is better than anyone else’s song at the moment.”

“It just kind of sticks to you, tighter than time,” he added. “I should say that Coldplay is not a rock band. I hope that’s obvious. There’s something much more interesting going on there, like the Isley Brothers or something,” he explained , adding that they “shouldn’t be judged by the rules of rock music.

According to Bono, Coldplay’s music is different from other rock bands. It has “different roots”, which is best illustrated in their song “Clocks”.

Coldplay announced that their tenth album, Moon Musicwill be released on October 4, 2024. The album will be produced by Max Martin and the band will release a limited edition, hand-signed, eco-friendly vinyl record.
