early life
Halina Reijn is the daughter of artists Frank Reijn (father) and Fleur Reijn (mother).
She was born on November 10, 1975 in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands.
However, her youth was spent in Groningen, Netherlands, where she grew up with her two sisters, Esther Reijn and Leonora Reijn.
Halina Reijn trained as an actor at the renowned Academy of Dramatic Arts in Maastricht.

While still a student, Halina Reijn was invited to join the theatre company’s troupe, where she played the lead roles in Hamlet as Ophelia and Shopping and Making Love as Lulu, for which she won the prestigious Dutch theatre award Colombina for Best Supporting Actress in 1998.
In 2003 she joined the Amsterdam Toneelgroep Theatre Company. At the Amsterdam Toneelgroep Theatre Company Halina Reijn played key roles in The Taming of the Shrew, Hedda Gabler, The Oresteia and Mourning Becomes Electra, for which she was nominated for the Theo d’Or for Best Actress.
Halina Reijn has appeared on the big screen in the Oscar-nominated films Zus & Zo (Paula van der Oest), A Father’s Affair (Maarten Treurniet) and Grimm (Alex van Warmerdam).
In 2006, she starred in A Thousand Kisses by the renowned director Willem van der Sande Bakuijsen, Black Book by Paul Verhoeven (Dutch Films’ entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar) and Blind Man by Tamar van den Dorp. In 2008, she played Margarethe von Owen in the film Valkyrie alongside legendary actor Tom Cruise.
In 2010, Halina Rehn played Lara in the film In Therapie, the Dutch version of In Treatment, and she also starred in two Dutch book adaptations, De Eetclub, directed by Robert Jan Westdijk, and Isabelle, directed by Ben Sombogaart.
In the summer of 2011, she joined the cast of veteran director Peter Greenaway’s Goltzius & The Pelican Company. In 2013, she played the lead role in Charlie’s Weekly TV series, a Dutch remake of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. In 2014, she starred in the box office hit Pak van Mijn hart, a romantic comedy perfect for the holiday season.
In 2016/2017 she starred in the musical film 7th Heaven and performed alongside Jude Law in the stage play Obsessed (a co-production of Toneelgroep Amsterdam and the Barbican Centre London).
In 2019, Halina Rain released a film called Basic Instinct; her debut as a film director, starring the talented Carice van Houten. The film won the prestigious Variety Piazza Grande Award, received a special nomination for Best Debut at the Locarno Film Festival, and was selected as the Dutch entry for the 92nd Academy Awards.
