Hu Shuli, a respected Chinese journalist and editor, was born on November 29, 1953, in Jinan, Shandong Province, China. Her father, Gao Qifeng, a high-ranking official of the Communist Party of China, and her mother, Hu Lingsheng, provided her with a politically oriented education that would have a significant impact on her future. Her older brother, Hu Yuzhi, died in January 1986 due to illness.
During the tumultuous Cultural Revolution, Hu Shuli and other urban youths underwent “re-education” in a rural village in Jiangxi Province.
