Jason Isbell will pay tribute to REM when the band is inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on Thursday (June 13) in New York City.

In 2021, Isbell released an album titled Georgia Greenfeatures him covering REM’s “Nightswimming” with Bela Fleck & Chris Thile, and “Driver 8” with John Paul White.

Isbell came up with the idea for the album weeks before the 2020 election, writing on Twitter, “If Biden wins Georgia, I will make a charity cover album of my favorite Georgia songs – – R.E.M., Gladys Knight, Vic Chesnutt, Allmans, Powerful Cat, Precious Bryant, Now It’s Overhead, etc… And damn, that would be fun.”

After releasing the album, REM responded to the love with a statement from Michael Stipe. “Jason’s version of “Driver 8” is amazing! I can’t wait to hear the rest of the record, especially ‘Reverse’ from Now It’s Overhead…one of my favorites from the past so far! Congratulations to Jason and unit 400, and thank you for shining a light on these great Georgia-based organizations. Let’s all get involved and keep Georgia green!! !”
