Mark James dies at 83: The life of musician Elvis Presley revisited

Mark James, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee and renowned songwriter who wrote music for some of the most prominent musicians in the music industry, such as Willie Nelson and Elvis Presley, has passed away. died at the age of 83.

According to a report published by BBC, the musician died at his home in Nashville, Tennessee, on June 8, 2024. The cause of death has not been announced.

Francis Rodney Zambon was born in Houston, Texas, on November 29, 1940, and fell in love with music at a very young age. By 1959, he was performing at local venues and recording a song titled “Jive Note”.

He had to put his music career on hold when he joined the army to fight in the Vietnam War.

The musician continued to develop his career in the late 1960s. He was initially signed as a staff songwriter for Chip Moman’s publishing company.

He is credited with composing some of famous singers’ biggest hits, such as Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”, ranked #91 on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” Always On My Mind”, Moody Blue, “It’s Only Love”. ,” and more.

He is the original singer of “Suspicious Minds”, which was inspired by his previous relationship. Although he is married, he still has a romantic attraction to his childhood sweetheart, who is also married to another man.

Unfortunately, the song was not a commercial success until Elvis Presley “went crazy for it” and recorded his version.

James’ career continued to flourish in the 1970s after he signed with Screen Gems-Columbia Music. The singer went on to write other major hits for stars such as Brenda Lee’s “Sunday Sunrise.”

His works have also been covered or recorded throughout his career by musicians including Jay-Z, Michael Bublé, Pet Shop Boys, Willie Nelson, etc. He has written over 300 songs.

James also won two Grammy Awards in his lifetime, including Song of the Year and Best Country Song, both for the song “Always on My Mind”.

In a statement following his death, his family said James filled any room with his “larger than life personality.”

They added: “He was a charming storyteller, with the sweetest smile, the most infectious laugh and a sparkle in his eyes that never faded.”
