MGK covers controversial country band at CMA Fest

The latest non-country artist to dip his toe into the Nashville pool? This time it’s MGK (a.k.a. Machine Gun Kelly), who surprised music fans by confirming he’d be included in the induction at the 2024 annual CMA Fest a week ago.

The four-day festival, held in downtown Nashville from June 6 to 9, has traditionally been a mecca for country music fans (it even bills itself as ” The ultimate country music fan experience”). MGK’s appearance on Spotify House’s set at Ole Red was ostensibly part of a group of unnamed “surprise guests”, but his pixelated image briefly appearing on the bill prompted speculation. investigators questioned on social media whether he was actually part of the lineup. including more expected names like Luke Bryan and Ashley McBryde.

It turns out that’s true. And, this being a country music event, MGK’s Friday performance not only included a few of his own (non-country) tunes but also a cover from one of the artists stirring the pot Nashville’s favorite, Chicks. His choice: the 1998 hit “There’s Your Trouble,” a plaintive tune about a man who loves the wrong woman and can’t get it in his head.

While the idea for this particular artist to do this particular song — a breezy, uptempo composition that largely benefits from lead singer Natalie Maines’ soulful vocals — may have some fans scratching their heads, but MGK’s confident yet mellow rendition of the song doesn’t. not half bad.

The fact that MGK – who described himself as an “anarchist” when asked about his political leanings in 2012 – chose to cover a song by a famous group critical of the US president in 2003 just added a little spice to the story. the whole thing.

Fan reaction to X has been largely positive, calling him “Country Colson” (MGK’s real name is Colson Baker). “I never would have guessed I needed to hear MGK cover the Chicks,” one fan noted, while another begged “please please please” for the actual cover to be released.

MGK also shared the stage with bona fide country star Jelly Roll, who performed his own song “Need a Favor” as well as MGK’s “My Ex’s Best Friend.”
