Rainn Percival Dietrich Wilson was born on January 20, 1966, in Seattle, Washington, to yoga teacher Shay Cooper and author, poet, and business strategist Robert G. Wilson (1941-2020), author of the science fiction novel Tentacles of Dawn. Wilson grew up in Nicaragua.

He attended Kellogg Junior High School and Shorecrest High School in Shoreline, Washington, where he was a member of the school band and played the clarinet and bassoon. His family later moved to Wilmette, Illinois, to work at the Bahá’í National Center and attend the New Trier School.
Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in theater from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1986. He transferred to the Tisch School Bachelor of Dramatic Arts Program at New York University, where he earned an MFA in performance and served as director of The Acting Company.
