A tragic train accident in Bengal’s Siliguri left five people dead and nearly 25 others injured. The incident took place on Monday when the Kanchanjunga Express traveling from Agartala in Tripura to Sealdah station in Kolkata was hit from behind by a goods train carrying goods in Rangapani area, near New Jalpaiguri station.

The unfortunate incident took place around 9 am, as confirmed by the divisional railway manager (DRM) of Katihar division of North Frontier Railway. The Kanchanjunga Express, whose official number is 13174, was en route to Kolkata when it was hit by a freight train, causing at least two compartments to derail.

Abhishek Roy, Additional Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling, emphasized the seriousness of the situation. “Five passengers were killed and 20-25 people were injured in the accident. The situation is very serious. The incident happened when a goods train crashed into Kanchenjunga Express,” he said.

After the accident, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was quick to express her concern. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured that rescue operations are underway amid the war. “Unfortunate accident in the NFR region. Rescue operations are taking place at the battlefield. Railways, NDRF and SDRF are working closely. The injured are being transported to the hospital. Senior officials have arrived at the scene,” he wrote on Twitter.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also expressed grief over the incident. “In a tragic incident, I learned about the Kanchenjunga Express train going to Agartala-Sealdah that met with an accident near New Jalpaiguri. Three carriages were particularly damaged in the collision with the freight car. Rescue operations have begun. The state government is in contact with the railway authorities to make every effort to rescue and ensure the safety of passengers.
