Early life
Tumi Masemola is a South African girl of N.Sotho (Pedi) descent, born and raised in Soweto, South Africa on 3 May 1982. Her childhood was not very good as she lacked some basic needs.
While still grateful for everything she has, the actress once took to Instagram to express her gratitude to her parents for all the care and love they gave her when she was young.
Tumi Masemola revealed that she has loved reggae and hip-hop music since she was a child.”
According to her, “I like reggae music because it makes me happy, it makes me reflect on myself, other genres of music can’t do that for me.“ .
Tumi Masemola further revealed that as a teenager, sometimes, when listening to reggae music, she would pick up a pen and notebook to jot down her thoughts.
Education
Tumi Masemola received her Bachelor of Arts from AFDA (African Film and Performance School) in 2002.
She began her basic education at Bopanang Primary School in Diepkloof. When South Africa was no longer an apartheid state, she transferred to Sacred Heart College in Observatory, where she completed Grade 7.
She then attended Sir John Adamson High School and developed her musical talent as a member of the school choir.
Personal life
Everything was perfect for Tumi Masemola in her matrimonial home until everything came crashing down like a landslide. Tumi Masemola and her ex-husband, Mandla N had a happy marriage until their marriage fell apart.
This period was indeed one of the most difficult and challenging moments for her as her estranged husband also accused her of stealing a whopping 4.5 million Rand from his account.
Details of what led to the couple’s divorce remain murky. But Tumi Masemola took the time to refute some of the allegations leveled by her ex-husband. Tumi Masemola said that all of Mandla Ngcongwane’s allegations were untrue, claiming that Mandla N. made all of those vulgar comments about her to make her look innocent.
After the ordeal, she revealed that she had to start over and what she learned from what happened between her and Mandla N.
“It was a terrifying experience,” she said. “I never thought I would go back to where I started, but it was a choice I had to make.” She also revealed that she moved in with her mother after the incident.
According to Tumi Masemola, she said, “It was challenging living with her mother because she couldn’t live the lavish life she used to have, in her mother’s house.” When you reach a certain level of success, you become obsessed with it. You believe that you are superior to others and take certain things and people for granted.“This experience humbled me and changed my perspective on life,” she recalled.
Career
Tumi Masemola launched her solo career in 2015, releasing two singles titled Sugar Free, featuring Nadia Nakai and BAE featuring Kwesta.
She formed the band Instrumentals in 2017 and they have released three albums: ‘Kasi Flava,’ ‘Salute,’ and ‘Round 3.’ The band she formed has achieved breakthrough success.
Some of their chart-topping works include ‘Woza December’ and ‘My Number One’, and in 2009 they were awarded the SAMA (South African Music Awards) for best urban-pop album.
