Why did Normani cancel her performance at the 2024 BET Awards?

Normani revealed that she will not perform at the 2024 BET Awards.

Hours before the 2024 BET Awards were scheduled to take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, Normani canceled her performance.

Taking to Instagram Stories, the former Fifth Harmony singer revealed that she is suffering from a “really bad” injury.

“I’m more frustrated and depressed than anyone would believe me to be,” Normani wrote in her post. “I wanted to come up here and update you guys that while I was training for BET, I had a really bad accident and got injured.”

Normani said she was “usually healthy” under the circumstances, but her medical team advised her not to continue with her highly anticipated performance.

“I would love to give you my all on that stage but performing would slow down my healing process. I’ve been through my process and tried my best to understand my feelings about this. I’m heartbroken and hate to let you down but I have to focus on healing at this time,” the “Motivation” singer shared.

Normani added that she hears and sees her fans and has “nothing more” than wanting to perform for her waiting fans.

“Thank you so much for understanding. Sending my love to BET for giving me and all the other beautiful black women this opportunity. This is definitely NOT how I envisioned this weekend but best believe I will protect everyone at home tonight. I’m sorry guys and love you so much,” Normani concluded her post.

Normani’s performance was one of the highly anticipated performances at the annual BET Awards. The performance is said to be very important as it will be her first live performance since she released her album, Dopamine.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Normani revealed the cause of her Dopamine of delay.

“Both my parents were very sick and I had to witness a lot of deaths in such a short period of time,” she shared. It turned out that Normani’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. That same year, her father learned he had prostate cancer.

Even though it took a long time, Dopamine only debuted at number 91 on the Billboard 200 album chart. However, critics praised Normani for her album. Rolling Stone rated the album four stars, saying “the wait was worth it” since she began recommending it in 2018.

“Throughout Dopamine, Normani owns her joy with the pride and confidence of the star she was always destined to become,” the review reads.
