early life
Adam Miller releases his first 7″ LP, Beach of Infants/Steps, on Handheld Heart. This debut was recorded in Seattle, Washington on a Tascam 4-track system.
At the time of the album’s release, Chromatics had expanded to include four members, with Miller being the only constant member throughout their history.
Miller was also a member of The Vogue, a Seattle-based band that attracted media attention. The Vogues, fresh out of high school, released art-punk music that rivaled The Fall. The band featured Johnny Whitney of The Blood Brothers on vocals and Hannah Briley of The Gossip on drums.

With the departure of The Vogue’s keyboardist, the remaining members formed Soiled Doves, releasing a 7-inch record and an album. Although Adam Miller founded Chromatics as a solo band, he soon recruited most of the members of The Soiled Doves.
Adam Miller took over as lead singer. Devin Welch was the guitarist. Newcomer Michelle Nolan was the bassist. Blilie was the drummer. In 2003, after the release of Shoplifting’s debut album, Chrome Rats vs. Basement Rutz, on Gold Standard Labs, all members except Miller left the band.

In 2005, the band changed its musical style to a more electronic one, a musical transition heavily influenced by the artistry of 1980s Italo disco and synth-pop performers who left an indelible mark on their approach.
