Madonna’s throne under threat: The Rolling Stones plan to break concert attendance record at iconic venue

The grand finale of Madonna’s Celebration Tour takes place on May 4, 2024, at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. The tour celebrates Madonna’s forty-year musical legacy and concludes with an unforgettable free concert.

According to Billboard, that show attracted 1.6 million fans.

The overwhelming attendance set a new record for an independent concert, confirmed by Live Nation, the tour’s promoter.

According to their press release, “Copacabana Beach became the world’s largest dance floor as Madonna performed some of the biggest hits from her unparalleled musical catalogue.”

“The Celebration Tour not only celebrates Madonna’s four decades of iconic music, but also her unprecedented life, unique artistry and groundbreaking career.”

The Brazilian idol’s aerial view shows a sea of adoring fans basking in the glow of countless concert lights.

Madonna was not the first to break the attendance record, however. In 2006, The Rolling Stones set a record for a solo concert at the venue with 1.5 million attendees, a record that still stands today.

New reports suggest the British band are making an ambitious bid to surpass the Queen of Pop’s new record.

Sources have told The Sun that band members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood are preparing for a comeback in South America, with plans to reclaim their throne on stage.

Discussions are underway with Daniel Grinbank, who is responsible for coordinating their performance at Copacabana, regarding a large-scale concert series scheduled to take place in South America in 2025.

“The Stones have a huge fan base in South America and there is a possibility they could take their Hackney Diamonds tour there in 2025,” they told the outlet.

“The reception to the North American shows has been fantastic and Mick, Keith and Ronnie are looking forward to it.”

Insiders say Grinbank has spoken to them about the possibility of returning to South America for upcoming shows and there is speculation that a concert at Copacabana after 19 years could see The Rolling Stones reclaim the record previously held by Madonna.

“Negotiations are ongoing but any announcements will not be made until the band has completed their North American tour.”

Rod Stewart was another record-breaking artist with an audience of 4.2 million people during his thrilling performance on December 31, 1994, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
