Mumbai Coastal Road Phase 2 was inaugurated by CM Eknath Shinde

The good news for Mumbai residents is that Mumbai Coastal Road Phase 2 was finally started on June 10, 2024, marking a major milestone in the city’s infrastructure development. Mumbai Coastal Road Phase 2 was inaugurated by CM Eknath Shinde.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the second phase of Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road. This is a project that connects Worli and Marine Drive and reduces travel time to 8 minutes.

This phase can be implemented from June 11, 2024. This is the opening of the northbound route from Marine Drive to Haji Ali. This will reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion between South Mumbai and the western suburbs.

Mumbai Coastal Road Phase 2 is a 10.58 km stretch connecting Marine Drive with the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. It has 4+4 lanes, a stilt bridge, skyway and twin tunnels, with entry and exit points at Amarsons Garden, Haji Ali and Worli Seaface. This is one of the city’s infrastructure development projects required in Mumbai as Mumbai residents and tourists are fed up with the traffic here. Traffic in Mumbai ranks first in India. This new construction is expected to cut travel time by 70% and reduce fuel consumption by 34%.

As of now, the northbound route from Marine Drive to Haji Ali has commenced operations and will be open from 7am to 11pm as work on connecting it to the Bandra-Worli Marine Link continues is underway. It is expected to be completed by October 2024.

However, some controversies are brewing such as delays and leak issues in the southbound tunnel. The construction cost for the first phase of the project is around ₹ 13,984 crore. The entire Mumbai Coastal Road Project aims to improve connectivity and promote the development of the Mumbai real estate market with the coastal road in areas such as Kandivali, Dahisar, Mira Road and Goregaon, which which has seen real estate prices increase by 10-15 % since the announcement of the project.

Mumbai Coastal Road Project is also known as Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road. It is a 10.58 km route from Worli to Marine Drive. The project was constructed by BMC and inaugurated by Mumbai’s SM. According to the two-day assessment, traffic on the Mumbai Coastal Road Project route appears to have reduced.

CM Eknath Shinde said at the time of his address during the Mumbai inauguration that the project will be completely completed by July 2023. But people are expecting it to be completed by October 2024.
