Concept and creativity
Izuku Midoriya was originally conceived as Jack Midoriya, a sickly salaryman working for a superhero supply company in a 2008 one-shot manga called My Hero.
However, Horikoshi later changed the character to a high school student in My Hero Academia, keeping the core characteristics of the character intact.
The prototype for Izuku’s character was Mikumo Akatani, a dark-haired, Quirkless boy who would have to rely on gadgets to become a hero.
Horikoshi revised and perfected the character designs, eventually creating the main character, Izuku Midoriya.
Voice actor
In the anime adaptation, Izuku is voiced by Daiki Yamashita in Japanese and Justin Briner in English.
Yamashita approached the role to portray Izuku’s growth and inner strength as the series progresses. While initially auditioning for other characters in Izuku’s class, Briner found the role empowering and accepting of the character’s nerdiness and passion for heroism.
